Insoluble fiber absorbs water as it moves through the digestive tract, meaning that it’s metabolically inert. Soluble fiber creates gases by fermenting in the colon. The two types of fiber-soluble and insoluble-offer unique benefits. But if fiber is so important, why don’t many dog owners know more about it? They certainly should, as it has several benefits. When it comes to fiber and most other ingredients, looking for whole sources, such as whole fruits and vegetables, is the best option. For example, the ingredient labeled “cellulose” might sound innocent, but it can come from all sorts of different places, including shredded paper. The quality of the fiber is important, as well, so make sure your dog is getting high-quality ingredients instead of unhealthy fillers. Although it comes only from plant-based ingredients, there are plenty of healthy ways it can be included in your dog’s diet-through ingredients such as sweet potatoes or green beans. Fiber is an often-overlooked nutrient in dog foods, but it’s surprisingly beneficial to our dogs.
